Statement on the Dalai Lama's Reaffirmation of His Reincarnation Process

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) welcomes the recent statement by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama regarding his plan for succession. His message is a powerful assertion of religious and cultural integrity in the face of growing interference from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Religious freedom is a fundamental human right. Followers of Tibetan Buddhism have endured decades of repression and interference from Beijing, including the abduction of the 11th Panchen Lama 30 years ago, whose whereabouts are still unknown.

The process of reincarnation for Tibetan Buddhists is a sacred tradition. Any attempt by the CCP to interfere in this spiritual matter is an unacceptable violation of religious liberty and must be swiftly condemned by the international community.

IPAC stands firmly with the Tibetan people in defending their cultural and religious rights. We call on governments around the world to reject any attempt to hijack the Dalai Lama’s plan for succession, and to be swift in welcoming the 15th Dalai Lama when recognised by the Gaden Phodrang Trust.
